What’s Wrong with This?

Wally `Larman installed a four-door access control system using four 24-volt 500ma DC fail-safe electric locks. Wally installed the proper cable, connecting the locks as shown in this diagram, and programmed the system to meet his client’s needs. When tested, the system performed as required, but the next day the client called and told Wally that all the doors were unlocked. When Wally arrived, he found the fuse in the lock power supply blown, so he tested each lock and cable but was unable to determine the cause of the problem. Can you see what Wally did wrong and what he must do to correct the problem?

Answer to: What’s Wrong with This?

Wally’s problem is caused by the size of the power supply he installed. Because he had four locks each drawing 500ma, Wally felt comfortable using a 2-amp power supply (4 x 500ma= 2 amp), but Wally failed to take into account the surge current. This surge occurs when the lock is energized and is always much greater than the normal operating current of the lock. The additional load caused the fuse in the power supply to blow. Wally should replace the 2-amp power supply with a unit that has sufficient capacity to handle the surge of all four locks at the same time, as shown in this diagram. Wally also should consider installing individual fuses for each lock so that a problem in one lock or cable will not affect the other locks.
