Access control is not an area in which central stations traditionally have been involved. But that’s changing now that more end user organizations have wide area data connections capable of supporting IP communications. Increasingly security dealers and systems integrators are finding a new source of recurring monthly revenue by offering remote monthly management of their access control accounts — either through their own central station or by using a wholesale central station that offers access control services.

Fire Alarm Systems: State of the Market

The slowdown in residential construction that began in 2007 is expected by some to spread to commercial construction this year. But innovative security dealers and systems integrators are shifting their fire alarm business to other segments of the market or are already in niches that are not as affected by any slowdowns.

Megapixel cameras and high frame rates are creating “mega-storage” needs for security system data. Although storage costs are decreasing, end users’ expectations of the resolutions, frame rates and time period of video and other data they can store are escalating to the extent that the savings in storage are spent on additional capacity.
