First-Ever ESX Show Was Well-Received by Attendees

By Laura Stepanek, Editor

Billed as "the only event targeted exclusively to the needs of security integration and monitoring companies," the inaugural Electronic Security Expo (ESX), which took place during the week of June 23, proved itself to be a success in its first year.
ESX, which is co-owned and sponsored by the Central Station Alarm Association and National Burglar & Fire Alarm Association, featured a heavy schedule of events at the Nashville Convention Center, but ultimately turned out to be a very balanced blend of educational sessions, award ceremonies, manufacturer displays and social gatherings.
Additionally, CSAA and NBFAA held board and committee meetings in the days prior to the show's official opening on June 25.
Slightly more than 1,900 people had registered for ESX, reported show manager John Galante, vice president and general manager of EH Events, including 1,350 visitors plus the exhibitor personnel. Approximately 125 exhibits were on display for two days during ESX.
The educational part of ESX was exceptionally robust, featuring seven different topic tracks plus workshops. The topics covered were: business development and management; central station operations; fire alarm systems; installation and service management; IP-enabled security; sales and marketing; and systems integration.
It's important to note that ESX, which is scheduled to occur next June 24 - 26 in Baltimore, is for the industry at-large, and the classes and workshops are designed for security company employees from all departments, including technical, central station and sales.
     Notable events included:
SDM held its third annual SDM 100 Gala in Nashville during ESX. The Gala is an elegant dinner and networking event where we honored, this year, more than 40 SDM 100 company executives who attended.
Mike Miller, vice president and co-owner of Moon Security Services Inc., Pasco, Wash., was sworn in as the 38th president of the NBFAA.
The CSAA presented its 2008 Central Station Excellence Awards. CSAA and awards co-sponsor SDM honored Mary Ann Ivy of Monitronics as Central Station Operator of the Year, Anita Ostrowski of Vector Security as Central Station Manager of the Year, and Alarm Detection Systems Inc. (ADS) of Aurora, Ill., as Central Station of the Year. You may read more about ESX at www.esxweb.com.

Network Surveillance System Deters Campus Crime
Grambling State University in northern Louisiana had separate pockets of analog camera systems scattered on campus a few years ago, none of which were easily upgradeable or integrated. In fact, as the technology became obsolete individuals could no longer operate the old analog systems, thereby causing the systems to be non-functional to the university. CameraWATCH Technologies, a partner of Axis Communications, Chelmsford, Mass., has worked with the university as a contractor installing the campus-wide surveillance system utilizing its fiber-optic backbone. The IP video technology allowed the university to use a centralized recording center in the information technology center's main production/server room. CameraWATCH also installed Genetec's video management system.

Thieves Targeting Construction Sites
Kicked-in doors, orange graffiti and burn marks were not what Paula Mercer Butterworth wanted to find in her housing development one day in June. Vandals had wreaked havoc at several homes under construction, causing a couple of thousand dollars' worth of damage. Butterworth's experience prompted her to attend a recent meeting of the local chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction, during which Mike Blatman, Kennewick, Wash., police's crime prevention specialist, provided tips and ideas for construction site crime prevention. Although construction site theft and vandalism are not as big an issue in the Tri-Cities as in other areas, they continue to be a problem, officials said.

Video Systems Considered for Patrol Cars
The Common Council of Lockport, N.Y., will look at official bids for the purchase of new video systems for several city police cars. To outfit eight police cars with the systems would cost between $50,000 and $57,000. The cars have been without video surveillance equipment for the past two years, after the last system, which was VHS-based, failed. The proposed systems will be completely digital, with video files stored on a server within the department.

New Prison Improves Security
The nearly century-old Stillwater prison in Minnesota has been replaced by a new segregation unit is built like a wheel, with a control room in the center and cellblocks branching off. The unit features more than 100 security cameras, wider hallways and solid cell doors that prevent inmates from throwing items, grabbing at guards or passing items to neighboring prisoners. The cells now lock electronically from the control bubble. Water and power to each cell can be controlled electronically, and correctional officers can speak to inmates in their cells via intercom. Videoconferencing facilities mean guards no longer must escort inmates to see visitors.

Video Surveillance Solution Provided to Charity
Visual Management Systems Inc., Toms River, N.J., has teamed with its investor and public relations firm, Mercom Capital Group llc, Austin, Texas, to provide Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Texas with a video surveillance system. Through its relationship with Mercom, VMS discovered the nonprofit recently suffered a string of thefts and acts of vandalism. To help Big Brothers Big Sisters combat this rash of crime, VMS donated eight cameras and a flagship Virtual Manager 2 DVR. The solution was implemented in two phases, culminating this past weekend when VMS CEO Jason Gonzalez and Director of Operations Kevin Sangirardi volunteered their time to complete the project.
