ASIS Requests Your Comments!
Draft Guideline for Facilities Physical Security Measures Open for Public Review

The ASIS Commission on Standards and Guidelines, Alexandria, Va., released a draft of the Facilities Physical Security Measures Guideline. This new guideline is intended to describe the main types of physical security measures that can be applied to minimize the security risks at a facility.

The guideline is available for a 45-day public review and comment period through Sept. 15. To view the guideline draft, go to www.asisonline.org/guidelines/guidelines_fpsm_draft.pdf .  To submit comments, go to www.asisonline.org/guidelines/comment_fpsm_draft.doc . All comments will be reviewed and considered before the guideline is published.
The Facilities Physical Security Measures Guideline assists in the identification of physical security measures that can be applied at facilities to safeguard or protect an organization's assets-people, property and information.  It is not aimed at a specific occupancy, but facilities and buildings in general.
The main categories of physical security measures used to protect facilities that are outlined in the guidelines are Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), Physical Barriers and Site Hardening, Physical Entry and Access Control, Security Lighting, Intrusion Detection Systems (Alarms), Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV), Security Personnel, and Security Policies and Procedures.

The guidelines were developed by the ASIS Commission on Standards and Guidelines, which advances the practice of security through the development of guidelines within a voluntary, non-proprietary, and consensus-based process utilizing the knowledge, experience, and expertise of ASIS members and the security industry.

Terror Attacks On Scientists Force Universities To Beef Up Security For Staffs
Razor blades in the mail. Leafleting at children's soccer games. Broadcasting researchers' home addresses. And in Santa Cruz over the weekend, firebombing scientists' home and cars.
Borrowing strategies used by anti-abortion extremists, some radical animal rights activists are increasingly taking their rage to scientists' doorsteps. That has forced universities to adopt tougher security steps to protect their staff and led to researchers retreating into secrecy, limiting details about their science, in a field which relies on sharing information.

Air Conditioner Thefts Heating UP
Scrap metal is selling for more than it used to, and thieves are taking note of the high price copper fetches. Tired of the hassles that come with being a landlord, Darlene Cooper is trying to sell her three-bedroom, two-bath stucco rental house in Shadow Ridge off State Road 52. The 65-year-old retired teacher mows the grass herself. She did so one recent Saturday and noticed some damage to the wood fence, as if someone had messed with it. Six days later, she got a call from her real estate agent: the air conditioning unit - replacement cost $3,800 - was gone.
Discover the details.

COUNTDOWN TO BEIJING: Many eyes will watch visitors
The blocking of human rights websites in China leading up to the Olympics is part of an information control and surveillance network awaiting visitors that will include monitoring devices in hotels and taxis and snoops almost everywhere. Government agents or their proxies are suspected of stepping up cyber-attacks on overseas Tibetan, human rights and press freedom groups and the banned Falun Gong spiritual movement in recent weeks. And China is spending huge sums on sophisticated surveillance systems that incorporate face recognition technology, biometrics and massive databases to help control the population.

Literature Can Help Educate Subscribers About the Risks of VoIP

This SDM exclusive reviews the consumer benefits of VoIP, but also examines the potential technical difficulties between VoIP service and alarm monitoring, such as power failures and Internet maintenance shut-downs.

This literature also explains in detail line seizure and how alarm systems must be connected to telephone systems in a home or business in order for them to transmit alarm signals properly. It discusses the importance of retaining a POTs telephone line for the alarm system, and discusses alternative methods of alarm signaling, such as long-range radio and Internet monitoring.

This literature is intended to be purchased in bulk. For more information, contact Heidi Fusaro at 630-694-4026 or fusaroh@bnpmedia.com.
