The Integrator Relationship
By Bill Zalud
It's no longer "come and go" for systems integrators; it's now partnerships with enterprise security leaders that go beyond technology to business and risk management goals. The combination of more encompassing risk management needs, especially in this year's economic environment, and more complex security technologies have driven security executives and their integrators closer together for a longer period of time. While both, in past years, had their own and sometimes distinct ways to look at the application of technology, today they share the same vision/mission centering on security's business and security goals, master plans and budgets.
It's a shared world of return on investment and total cost of ownership. But, at the same time, solid, honest communications between security executives and integrators is more important. Scott Fixmer, CPP, senior security analyst at Exelon Corporation, believes in it. "Good communication, clear and measurable expectations and active participation of the integrator staff at all levels" are essentials.

Trying to Fight Off Gun Amendment, Norton Points to Recent Mass Killings
Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton has stepped up her attacks on a guns amendment to legislation that would provide the District of Columbia with a full-voting representative in the House. In a statement posted Monday on her Web site, Norton said two recent mass killings underscore the need to remove language added by the Senate that would roll back many of the city's guns restrictions.
How would the bill change gun laws?
Sheriff Looks at Hiring Firm to Operate Jail Faced with a roughly $1 million price tag to fix up the deteriorating Miller County jail, the county is considering hiring a private security company to take over. If the county contracts with Community Education Centers, a company that runs two other Texarkana jails, it would be a first for a county jail in Arkansas.

Feds Plan Spy Towers for Border; Eleven More Cameras Will Be Trained on Water Traffic Between Detroit and Canada
The U.S. Border Patrol is erecting 16 more video surveillance towers in Michigan and New York to help secure parts of the U.S.-Canadian border, awarding the contract to a company criticized for faulty technology with its "virtual fence" along the U.S.-Mexico boundary. How will the cameras be utilized? |

The Economy: Money Disappears, Lies Reappear
Enterprises thinking about cutting budgets for investigations and background screenings should think again. National and international studies recently show that job applicants at all position levels are more likely to lie as the recession grows. At the same time, and thanks in large part to the Internet, newer, less expensive and accurate screening services offer a menu of information services that better fit into today's shrinking budgets.
