NBFAA Takes on Vegas in 2006

The National Burglar and Fire Alarm Association (NBFAA), Irving, Texas, hosted the NBFAA Spring Conference and Chartered State Association (CSA) Symposium in Las Vegas April 2-6, 2006. The theme for the conference was Mission Possible.

On Monday, NBFAA kicked off the day with a discussion of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, a federal law that covers issues such as establishing a public company accounting oversight board, auditor independence, corporate responsibility and enhanced financial disclosure.

During a special lunch on Monday, the association honored outgoing association leadership at the annual leadership awards luncheon, followed by a board of directors meeting in the afternoon.

The third annual Alarm Industry Research and Educational Foundation (AIREF)/NBFAA Golf Tournament gave attendees a day of Golf Without Guilt at the Revere Golf Club on April 4, the Tuesday before the start of the International Security Conference and Exposition (ISC) West. Proceeds from the golf tournament benefited AIREF, an all-volunteer, non-profit group dedicated to conducting research that benefits the public interest as well as the interests of the alarm industry.

After the tournament, AIREF and NBFAA hosted an evening event at the Tangerine Lounge & Nightclub at Treasure Island Hotel & Casino. Golfers had a chance to win money and prizes.

In addition, two individuals were recognized for their contributions to the association. The Sara E. Jackson Award for leadership on a committee was presented to Paul Baran of Bosch Security Systems, in recognition of his outstanding leadership as a committee chairperson for the NBFAA. Baran is chair of the Education Committee.

“The leadership and dedication Paul brings impacts the association and industry on many levels,” said NBFAA executive director Merlin Guilbeau. “Under Paul’s chairmanship, we have adopted new National Training School guidelines, expanded course offerings to include topics like CCTV, residential integration and business skills courses.”

The Morris F. Weinstock Award was presented to Mel Mahler, ADS Security, in recognition of a lifetime of service to the electronic life safety, security and systems industry. “Volunteerism doesn’t stop with Mel. He ensures that each of his ADS security branches are actively involved in and strongly supportive of their local and state association,” said NBFAA president Scot Colby. “He has gone beyond the call of duty, worked whole-heartedly as a volunteer and a leader and for that, we thank him.”
