Although the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has declared that IP-enabled services like voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) are not covered by traditional state public utility regulations, security dealers and system integrators need to provide for the differences that voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) make necessary, advises the National Burglar and Fire Alarm Association (NBFAA).
VoIP and other IP-enabled services such as those offered by cable companies currently account for approximately a few hundred thousand lines today, but they are expected to grow as cable companies and local phone companies start using the technology.
