As part of a fire alarm system that included total smoke detection coverage, Wally `Larman installed smoke detectors below a solid-tile, raised computer room floor. Wally properly spaced the detectors and installed each as shown in this diagram. The problem is caused by the way that Wally installed the smoke detectors under the raised computer floor. It might have been easier for Wally to mount them to the floor, but this is not allowable, because it would be prone to dirt buildup and is a violation of NFPA, which states that smoke detectors be mounted only in the orientation for which they have been listed. Figure A.5.7.3.2.2 of NFPA 72 2002 shows the permitted and not-permitted mounting instructions for raised-floor smoke detectors. Wally should remove the smoke detectors and re-install them as shown in this diagram. After he completes the work and tests the system, he can contact the fire marshal and request a re-inspection.
