ADT’s New Canopy Provides Security to Connected Devices

adt
January 11, 2016
The ADT Corporation, a provider of security and automation solutions for homes and businesses and No. 1 on the SDM 100, unveiled at CES the ADT Canopy, the company’s new security-as-a-service solution. This is the latest smart security innovation for ADT designed to secure and connect not only the modern home or business, but also the always connected, on-the-go consumer.

By fostering relationships with leading smart home and consumer electronics brands, including Kidde, Samsung, August and Wink, ADT will provide its 24/7 professional monitoring services to popular wearable devices, connected hubs, life safety products, point devices and more.

“The introduction of ADT Canopy as a security-as-a-service solution is a game-changer for both the Smart Security space and ADT,” said Naren Gursahaney, CEO of ADT. “We have leveraged the company’s significant expertise and heritage as a security company, paired with the latest smart tech solutions, to create a new category that will redefine how we protect our customers — both in and out of the home.”

From the latest connected platforms like the Wink HUB to wearables like the Samsung Gear S2 watch and popular smart home technology including the August doorbell cam, ADT Canopy extends protection to these popular solutions. Whether consumers are at home or on-the-go, they can access instant, live help from ADT’s 24/7 professionally monitored security network. ADT Canopy will be integrated directly within the mobile applications of these popular connected devices for easy, mobile access. ADT Canopy will secure smart home hubs, life safety products, wearables and point devices including the following initial ADT Canopy partners: LG, Kidde, the Samsung Gear S2 watch, Samsung SmartThings, the August doorbell cam, Wink, the Honeywell Lyric line of products, the Ring video doorbell and the Roost smart battery.

Through 24/7 professional monitoring and rapid response, ADT Canopy subscribers will be secured from situations such as intrusions, fires and unsafe situations outside the home. Depending on the device, help can be contacted and dispatched automatically or via a one-touch panic command for a seamlessly connected experience. ADT said in a press release it designed these collaborations to raise the standards for consumer protection and redefine the next generation of security for the connected world.

In addition, ADT Canopy will serve the growing segment of consumers demanding best-in-class professional security monitoring, coupled with the flexibility to access that protection from the connected devices that fit their lifestyles.

To empower mobile customers and those looking for increasingly flexible security solutions, customers can subscribe to ADT Canopy on a month-to-month basis, with no-term contracts and service options, starting at a price point that will be released shortly.

ADT demonstrated its canopy at CES 2016 in January.

Wearables
Through a dedicated ADT Canopy Panic app on the Samsung Gear S2 Watch, users can quickly tap on the ADT icon for live help and to be connected to emergency personnel in their area. Whether at home or on-the-go, consumers will have peace of mind knowing they are protected by ADT. With ADT Canopy, wearables and mobile devices such as the Samsung Gear S2 watch gain access to ADT’s monitoring center whether the user is inside or outside the home.

Connected Hubs & Cloud Platforms
Consumers using popular smart home connected hubs and cloud platforms like Samsung SmartThings and Wink Hubs will find the solution integrated directly within their in-app experience — for quick access to ADT Canopy services. For example, if Samsung SmartThings or Wink-compatible door and window sensors detect abnormal activity, users that opt-in have peace of mind that ADT Canopy will spring into action. No matter where they are, consumers can access ADT Canopy directly within the SmartThings or Wink mobile application to manage their home security or connect to live help.

Point Devices
ADT Canopy will also protect popular smart home point solutions, including Kidde life safety products and the new Roost Smart Battery. Consumers who leverage these connected products to control and monitor these devices can also directly reach live help within their current Kidde or Roost mobile application. Future life safety solutions from Kidde, including connected smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, will also look to take advantage of the ADT Canopy services.

The Roost Smart Battery transforms existing smoke and CO alarms into smart alarms. Roost addresses the frightening realities of fire damage and loss by helping improve the safety of family and home in a simple, yet affordable way. Designed in a familiar 9V form factor, the Roost Smart Battery is available for less than $35. Users can install it in less than five minutes by downloading the Roost app, connecting to home Wi-Fi and then retrofitting into an existing smoke alarm.

Additionally secured by ADT Canopy, the Ring video doorbell and the August doorbell cam will provide added security and comfort when checking who is at the front door with in-app panic buttons designed to allow instant access to emergency assistance. The August doorbell cam also connects to the August Smart Lock, allowing customers to lock or unlock doors, create virtual keys for guests and track anyone who locks or unlocks the door with instant notifications. August and ADT are also working together on additional security features that will be integrated into Canopy. The Honeywell Lyric family of products is also joining those devices secured by ADT Canopy, starting with the Lyric Water Leak and Freeze Detector.

ADT has now started the ADT Canopy Developer Program, working with select partners to encourage innovative Internet of Things companies to develop and offer their products with the ADT Canopy service fully integrated into their customer experience. At ADT’s invitation, Canopy partners can access a fully featured developer’s portal, enabling them to learn about and create proof of concept integrations with Canopy on their own. As a result of this program, ADT Canopy customers will benefit from the ability to use some of their favorite smart home products coupled with ADT’s industry-leading professional monitoring.

Secured by ADT Canopy services will become available for customers this spring. For information, visit www.ADT.com.
