What’s Wrong with This?
One of Wally `Larman’s residential customers changed his telephone service to VoIP as shown in this diagram with a self-install kit. After switching to VoIP, the digital communicator had intermittent problems transmitting signals to the monitoring office. Can you see what is causing the troubles and what Wally can do to correct the problem?
Answer to: What’s Wrong with This?
Wally’s problem most likely is caused by the “backfeeding” method used to connect the output of the telephone adaptor to the internal telephone wiring. This technique puts the RJ-31X jack at the end of the internal wiring rather than at the beginning, preventing the communicator from seizing the telephone line when a signal has to be sent. Wally should rewire the telephones as shown in this diagram and recheck the dialer. He also should make sure that backup battery power is provided for the modem and telephone adaptor.
