Remember When?

December 17, 2003

Electricity, and in today's world electronics, have given birth to a wide array of devices that can enhance security in ways unthinkable even a decade ago. This month's quiz is based upon the technology that to many long-time security dealers was once cutting-edge. For fun, see how much you know about security technology before microprocessors were introduced.

Answers on page 78.

What's Wrong with This?

Wally Larman installed an ADEMCO 1003 Deluxe Control Instrument with an ADEMCO 612 Automatic Telephone Dialer at one of his commercial customersâ' sites, and connected it as shown in this diagram. When Wally tested the system it worked fine locally, but every time his customer turned the key switch to bell test and left for the night, the 612 dialer was activated. Can you see what Wally did wrong and what he must do to correct the problem?

Why Does this Keyswitch Inadvertently Activate the Dialer?

1. In a McCulloh system the sub-

scriber's transmitter could send

a. two rounds for exit.

b. three rounds for an alarm.

Answer to What’s Wrong with This?

Wally's problem is caused by the jumper he installed between terminals C and D. Wally should remove the jumper, as shown in this diagram, and re-test the system. One should only install the jumper when using the A and B terminals for externally powered local notification devices. The green and white wires were used in conjunction with the ADEMCO 355 delay module to provide an entry/exit loop.
