Adesta, an Omaha, Neb., systems integrator and project management company for communication networks and electronic security systems, announced yesterday that it was awarded a $5.9 million contract to upgrade security for the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART).

 

The project will take place in the cities of San Francisco and Oakland, Calif. Completion is projected for early 2010.

 

Adesta will implement a complex physical security device installation program in BART train stations. Nearly all of the deployment activities will take place during night and weekend hours in order to avoid impacting the normal, daily transit operations for Bay Area commuters. The venture involves the installation of strategically located cameras, which will be connected to BART’s existing communications infrastructure.

 

For security reasons, neither BART nor Adesta will discuss the high-tech security equipment Adesta is installing other than to say it will result in significant communication and infrastructure upgrades to several San Francisco and East Bay BART stations as well as the Transbay Tube, which runs under the San Francisco Bay and carries half of BART’s 379,000 riders each workday.

 

Prior to beginning construction and installation, Adesta will provide final engineering validation of all the systems to be installed. Extensive planning for staging, access and other logistics is required to meet the needs of BART’s intricate transit system.
