Worth a Thousand Words

June 29, 2009
By: Laura Stepanek

The SDM staff had the pleasure of hosting the fourth annual SDM 100 Gala last Thursday evening at the Hilton Baltimore, with more than 230 people in attendance including professionals from nearly 50 of the SDM 100 ranked companies, along with the Gala sponsors.
Most of the evening was spent talking and laughing with friends and acquaintances, meeting new people, and enjoying the delicious dinner and entertainment (the comedy hypnotism show with audience volunteers was both believable and amusing).

But there was a moment during the Gala that brought tears to my eyes, and which I’ll never forget as long as I live.

As I announced the name of each SDM 100 company and its 2009 rank, I asked one senior-level representative from each company to join me on stage for a photograph. Yes, we had planned this in advance, and even discussed the best way to stage it so that we could photograph it. At first, as I read off the names… “No. 89, Yarnell Security Systems, represented by Ron Yarnell… No. 70, Washington Alarm, represented by Alan Foreman… No. 8, Vector Security, John Murphy…,” I watched as each person came forward proudly to be recognized and took their positions on the stage.

By the time I got to the 20th or so name, I saw that this group needed some rearranging so they could be better photographed. SDM’s associate editor, Heather Klotz, stepped in and redirected some folks to the upper part of the stage. So it was somewhat clumsy to start, but you could start to see the elegance of the final result.

I read the last name in attendance, “No. 74, Acadian on Watch, Blane Comeaux,” and then glanced around me. “Ladies and gentlemen, may I present the 2009 SDM 100.”

You could feel the POWER! On stage with me were leaders from 47 of the largest security businesses operating in the United States, including many of the top 10 – ADT, Brink’s, Protection One, Stanley Convergent Security Solutions. I was suddenly overwhelmed by the significance of this moment, and felt immensely honored to be standing alongside of these leaders.

I said it last Thursday evening, and I’ll say it again here. My long career with SDM has given me the opportunity to get to know all of you; and to watch your businesses grow up and to grow up with you in the industry. If it weren’t for your successes, I wouldn’t be standing here. I wouldn’t have this job. If it weren’t for your successes, SDM wouldn’t exist and thrive.

Thank you to all who attended – we hope you all enjoyed the SDM 100 Gala.

The SDM staff wishes to express its sincere appreciation to the sponsors of the 4th annual SDM 100 Gala. Your sponsorship made the Gala a delightful and successful event. It wouldn’t be possible without your support.
