Modular Security Systems Inc. (MSSI) announced in October 2008 that it had received a formal notice of allowance from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for its intellectual property application for the now patented Modular Access Control (MAC) Portal. Six years later, in October 2014, MSSI announced it received another patent for the MAC Portal in the European Union applicable to the 38 member states European Patent Organization.

In addition to this most recent European Union patent award and the U.S. patent award of 2008, MSSI has patent awards in Canada, Nigeria, Algeria and Egypt.               

Working with turnstile manufacturers such as Boon Edam and Alvarado Manufacturing, and security integration/time-and-attendance groups such as Convergint Technologies, Stanley Security and Xentry, MSSI and the MAC Portal have been able to secure both industrial plants and commercial construction projects throughout the world. The MAC Portal, integrated with biometric readers, has also been utilized to secure U.S. military base camps across the Middle East. Most notably, the construction project of the Freedom Tower in New York was secured using patented MAC Portals from MSSI, the company said.

MSSI said it plans to use the issuance of the EU patent to partner with trusted names in the construction and security access control industries in all or many of the EU countries. The company reported that, since the issuance of its first MAC Portal U.S. patent in 2008, it has seen exceptional growth — even between 2009 through 2012 when many companies were struggling.
