Yale exit device

Yale Locks & Hardware’s redesigned and scaled-back packaging for the company’s 1800 Series, 2100 Series and 7000 Series of exit devices shows that less can be more — more efficient, more economical and more environmentally friendly.

The company initiated a number of programs in recent years to enhance the sustainability of day-to-day operations. But after implementing big production-related changes, employees began seeking out small steps that would also reduce the company’s environmental footprint.

“One of the things we noticed was the packaging for our exit devices was considerably larger than the hardware itself,” said Lori Brown, technical marketing manager at Yale. “We viewed this discrepancy as a chance to make a quick change that would bring meaningful results.”

The smaller packaging now measures 37.5 inches x 5 inches x 3 inches, compared to the previous dimensions of 47 inches x 9 inches x 5.5 inches. The new boxes are made from environmentally-friendly unbleached, corrugated cardboard that is recyclable. The redesigned packaging also protects the product without having to use styrofoam for padding.

“In addition to the green benefits, the exit device packages are more efficient,” Lori explained. “Less material means less space needed for inventory and transport.”
