Former Major League Baseball (MLB) right fielder and perhaps one of the most feared sluggers in the game, standing at 6-ft. 6-in. tall, Darryl Strawberry Sr., aka “Straw” or “The Straw Man,” will be at ISC East this year making a celebrity appearance to sign autographs for fans. Strawberry, the former Mets and Yankees legend, is sponsored by Rapid Response.

“We picked Darryl because he’s a New York baseball icon with universal, tri-state appeal, having played for both the Yankees and the Mets,” says Sherida Sessa, event director, ISC East.

As a four-time World Series champion, Strawberry’s long, looping yet powerful swing could be seen in live action from when he was drafted in 1980 into the amateurs until he retired after his final game on October 3, 1999 as a MLB legend. His first season as a MLB player was in 1983, when he batted 26 homeruns and stole 19 bases, earning him the title National League Rookie of the Year. Three years later, he laid claim to 27 home runs, 93 RBIs and 28 stolen bases, helping to lead the New York Mets to victory over the Boston Red Sox, therefore, winning the 1983 World Series.

The Straw Man’s successful baseball career continued on with 39 home runs and 36 stolen bases, earning him membership to the exclusive 30-30 club, and a .545 slugging percentage in 1988. After the 1990 season, he signed on with the Los Angeles Dodgers, but due to injuries, his playing time was limited. He eventually retired from baseball with a career finish of 335 home runs, 1,000 RBIs and eight All-Star selections.

Be sure to allow time in your ISC East 2015 schedule to visit Rapid Response in booth #412 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19 to give Straw a high-five!
