SDM Welcomes Laura Toops as Managing Editor, Promotes Amanda Reed to Associate Editor

Laura Toops Headshot
October 6, 2021

SDM welcomed a new managing editor on Oct. 4. Laura Mazzuca Toops is the former editor of the Insurance Technology Association, a website and digital magazine focusing on insurance technology trends, including IoT and cybersecurity. She has more than 20 years’ experience in the B2B publishing world and holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Columbia College Chicago.

As SDM managing editor, Toops will write exclusive cover stories such as SDM’s State of the Market series, as well as other feature-length articles. She will be in charge of the magazine’s case study department, Technology at Work, as well as the Technology Solutions & Skills department, and also manage the annual Monitoring Today and Video Monitoring Today supplements.

“We are so happy to have Laura join our team,” said SDM Editor Karyn Hodgson. “With her extensive background in B2B media and knowledge of the somewhat overlapping insurance technology space, I have no doubt she will quickly learn the security industry and she will be a valuable addition to the SDM staff.”

In addition to hiring Toops, SDM also promoted former Staff Writer Amanda Reed to associate editor. “Joining us last year as staff editor, Amanda jumped in with enthusiasm and has been an effective and hard-working member of the team,” Hodgson said. “She has increased our brand’s presence in the podcast and social media arena and made the Video SDM Security News Roundup her own.”

Reed will continue to manage the news department and be the primary contact for industry news releases and content, as well as posting to social media. In addition to her existing duties, Reed will now be in charge of the eNewsletters and Industry Voices blog.
