Western Washington University‘s sprawling campus in scenic Bellingham stretches 215 acres, with nearly 15,000 students walking the grounds during the fall and spring semesters. The university gives prominence to campus safety, recently upgrading its fire alarm system in 47 buildings and adding a mass notification system featuring Technomad advanced audio loudspeakers to improve audio quality and long-distance coverage outdoors.
Siemens Building Technologies Division announced that it gave Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) $100,000 to support the construction of the school’s Fire Protection Engineering Lab. In recognition of the gift, WPI named the Fire Protection Engineering building’s conference center after Siemens to honor its leading role in supporting the advancement of fire and smoke detection technology and its underlying scientific study, the institution said.

Specialty monitoring alerts customers to changes in critical environments that take those environments out of desired/normal conditions. These changes typically involve temperature, water, humidity, pressure, flow, and power. In order to offer specialty monitoring successfully, experienced dealers and integrators recommend “thinking inside the box.” Think about what else you can tie to your security alarm panel box that will provide more value for your customer and more revenue for you.
Fire alarm control panels are finally catching up with newer communications technologies, and having network and cellular connectivity also unleashes new capabilities.
The fire alarm business has always been driven largely by code requirements — and for years that meant every fire installation had two phone lines to help ensure that alarm signals would be received by the central station.
Reliability and redundancy were critical wheneBay selected the fire and life safety systems for its new Tier IV level data center in South Jordan, Utah. Because maintaining and operating this $287 million data center is an absolute necessity, fire and life safety systems help meet the important goal of continuous operation and mission continuity. The fire and life safety system design complexities were handled by Schmid & Associates, P.C. Fire Protection Engineers of Maryland.
NOTIFIER by Honeywell has earned International Building Code (IBC) seismic certification on its entire portfolio of fire alarm and emergency communications systems. All conventional and addressable fire alarm control panels, digital voice command systems and networking components, including NOTIFIER's ONYX FirstVision™ touch screen display for first responder scene assessment, passed a series of lengthy shake tests performed by a Certified Seismic Qualification Agency.
When a team is repeatedly getting beat by a powerful player, an adaptive defense will often switch to a double team or even collapse into a triple team at times. It is a useful concept as there is strength in numbers. False alarms are an exasperating adversary in fire detection.
The fire protection systems on the Miles College campus in Fairfield, Ala., have been updated by fire alarm and security integrator Protection 1 using Fire-Lite Alarms’ MS-9600UDLS addressable fire alarm systems. Utilizing an existing IP network for fire alarm reporting to Protection 1’s central station, the school was able to boost the reliability and response time of fire alarm communications while eliminating the cost of two phones lines per system.
