Every year stadiums and arenas welcome tens of thousands of visitors to concerts and events, but we often ask, are stadiums ready for the risks and vulnerabilities that come with crowded venues? In the height of many events at large scale venues taking place, the increased need for physical security in large venue settings is more critical than ever as the scale and stakes of events continue to rise.

83 percent of Americans are concerned with safety measures at large scale events such as concerts and sporting events, including physical and digital attacks. These events are aimed to be a captivating experience for fans but can often leave them worrying about potential risks in attending. To alleviate concerns amongst individuals, venues must outline and prioritize innovative security measures that not only enhance customer experiences, but safeguard fans and address global challenges for future-focused events.

The answer? Increased physical security integration.

Benefits of Video Surveillance

Sports stadiums and venues largely offer comprehensive strategies and approaches to enhancing safety and ensuring smooth operations by using video surveillance systems. A primary benefit of the solution is the real-time monitoring of large crowds, which allows security teams to identify and respond to disturbances that might arise during an event. These systems enable security teams to take a proactive approach to prevent incidents from escalating and provide attendees with a safe and secure environment.

Beyond real-time safety protocols, the integration of video surveillance systems can also enable these venues to evaluate their strategies and protocols post-event. For example, venues can explore prior footage from video surveillance security to continuously evaluate their response effectiveness and help improve operational efficiencies towards future situations.

Advancements in video surveillance have also made it easier to monitor specific areas such as concession stands or hallways. This comprehensive coverage ensures that any issues, such as theft or overcrowding, can be addressed promptly, enhancing both security and the overall flow of guests within the venue. For example, with the impact video surveillance has on foot traffic, the system can assist in directing crowds to less congested areas — which not only improves safety but also contributes to more enjoyable, hassle-free events for all attendees.

From the Endzone to the Cloud

As venues evolve, embracing technological advancements alongside operational improvements is essential. A key strategy for achieving this is prioritizing a shift to cloud-based infrastructure. Cloud-first transformation empowers venues to enhance operations and implement strategic changes more effectively. This transition not only boosts operational efficiency and reduces costs but, most importantly, enhances the overall fan experience. By leveraging cloud technologies, venues can seamlessly integrate advanced tools that leverage automation, analytics, and intelligence to optimize building and security operations and occupant comfort in large-scale environments. These tools enable stronger and faster AI-driven decision making to drive predictive maintenance and adjustments which improve real-time actionable insights for security teams. These innovations can help identify potential vulnerabilities and threats, ensuring a safer, more engaging, and successful event experience for all attendees.

Another benefit to a cloud-based approach is the impact on protecting against risks of cybersecurity attacks. Seventy percent of sporting organizations noted that they have been targeted by a cyberattack annually, calling for a need for more secure measurements to security systems. From in-stadium attendance to ticket buying, there is risk for potential breaches, or complications, which is where cloud platforms can play a vital role in helping venues by offering scalable security solutions that improve their ability to manage these attacks.

Cloud platforms provide an essential strategy that enables security frameworks to continuously evolve and implement policies that ensure the highest level of protection against emerging threats. With venues and stadiums operating on a global scale, they are frequent targets for cyberattacks, underscoring the need for a unified and proactive approach to safeguarding fan and event data. This centralized approach helps venues remain ahead of potential vulnerabilities, enhancing security measures and maintaining trust in large-scale events.

Impact of AI Integration

Venues hosting thousands to hundreds of thousands of attendees navigate an array of challenges, from access control and crowd management to the integration of innovative surveillance technologies. These technologies are enhancing operations for venues and stadiums to provide more efficient and effective solutions to combat potential threats and complexities that arise.

The integration of emerging technologies is reshaping the way these venues improve operations. Let’s look at AI — the technology is improving operations such a monitoring crowd behavior, emergency responses, and facial recognition more easily and accurately. With the support of advanced solutions that have integrated AI capabilities (e.g., cameras and systems) security teams can have more insight into potential dangers such as aggressive behavior or unattended items. This will alert security teams to act swiftly, thereby improving overall event safety.

While AI-enabled technology is highly effective in automating and accelerating security efforts, venues cannot independently manage security measures due to several critical limitations on its own. Given AI lacks the human ability to contextualize threats and make judgment calls in complex situations, this creates an essential opportunity for AI to integrate with physical security systems, enabling more responsive protocols to protect these venues. In tandem with technology and automation, human involvement in complex security situations is critical for success. It’s nearly impossible to rely entirely on AI to identify, evaluate, and alert to each and every threat since it lacks the ability to think critically and make ethical decisions about a security scenario. This means security professionals will continue to play a key role in security operations even as technology evolves and augments how we approach venue security.

The Future of Stadium Security

From sports events to concerts, stadiums are already embracing a future shaped by advanced security measures to enhance safety. Sporting leagues have started the rollout of facial recognition protocols to protect fans, signaling the start of a broader commitment to ensuring security at large-scale events. These initial steps mark just the beginning of comprehensive efforts to keep attendees safe and secure at venues on a global scale.

Physical security in sports stadiums is reshaping the definition of the ‘fan experience.’ In the coming years, we will continue to see an emergence of stadiums and venues investing in AI-driven technologies that are improving access control and video surveillance systems to improve security infrastructure for all attendees to events in the years to come.

The objective of modern venues is to create a secure environment that creates excitement and a positive atmosphere without compromising the safety or enjoyment of fans. Achieving this balance requires a proactive approach, where venues are prioritizing the invest in physical security technologies. By making these improvements, it secures the trust of attendees to engage more fully, knowing their safety is prioritized without taking away from the positive experience of the event.
