Brivo has named two college students to receive a NextGen Scholarship, supported by the Brivo Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee.

The scholarship aims to provide financial assistance to underrepresented students in marketing, engineering or business programs interested in the security industry at universities local to the Brivo Bethesda, Md., office, Hispanic Serving Institutions, and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU).

Now in its second year, the annual program was open to students continuing or re-enrolling at community colleges or undergraduate four-year institutions, including Howard University, Montgomery College, Morgan State University, University of Maryland – Baltimore County, and Towson University.

The 2022 NextGen Scholarship winners are Annia Matthews and Quaran Ahmad, both from Howard University.

Annia Matthews hails from Phoenix, Ariz., and is a junior at Howard University. She majors in computer science and is working on her AWS cloud computing certification. She is also taking a course in the foundations of user experience, hoping to gain certification as well.

“I plan to start choosing a concentration for my major in the next coming months and obtain a summer internship working in that field,” Matthews said. “I am very grateful to have been awarded the Brivo NextGen Scholarship, which I know will be a positive factor in my academic success this semester.”

Ahmad is also a junior at Howard University and majoring in architecture. In his free time, he loves to read, study nature, practice photography and support his local community. He has a life goal to design low-income housing and schools in his hometown of Chicago after he graduates.

“I believe it is highly imperative for modern designers to implement futuristic conceptual thinking to further progress human society,” Ahmad said.

In an announcement,  Brivo described Matthews and Ahmad as “extremely impressive” while acknowledging “the other applicants and their tremendous accomplishments.”

The company stated it “will continue to support the future of our industry and remain committed to opening doors to students who want to excel. We look forward to staying in contact with them should other Brivo opportunities arise and are excited to usher in this next generation of talent.”
