Fact-Based Filtering of Notifications & Events Leads to Better Outcomes

By Peter P. Giacalone

When referring to security and operational management — whether its residential or commercial — remote video monitoring is table stakes. Monitoring personnel, whether in retail, critical infrastructure, construction or the residential channel, all understand that remote video provides quantifiable and meaningful value. The ability to observe, record, and respond remotely in real time has revolutionized the way we all manage security, safety, risk, and efficiency.

However, traditional video monitoring systems face challenges such as false alerts and alarms, inefficient use of resources, and delayed response times, especially in more active environments. The integration of various presence detection technologies for situational awareness presents a strong and proven solution to these issues, driving more accurate, proactive, and cost-effective outcomes for both professionally monitored systems as well as self-monitored systems through simple messaging.

Understanding Presence Detection in Video Monitoring

Presence detection is deployed utilizing various technologies that provide intelligent analytics to determine whether a person or object is present within a monitored space. Unlike basic motion detection — which may be triggered by irrelevant activity such as weather effects, shadows, or animals — presence detection systems use advanced algorithms that can accurately determine when motion stems from human motion. Additionally, by leveraging artificial intelligence, systems that monitor personal wireless devices can detect and report humans that belong in an environment versus humans that are not expected to be present in a particular environment. This allows for differentiating between meaningful and inconsequential events when reporting to a remote monitoring center or sending a messaging or badge notification.

When integrated with remote video monitoring platforms and mobile applications, these tools enable the system to send alerts or alarms only when specific human presence is confirmed, reducing false positives and enabling focused, timely responses.

Improved Situational Awareness

Presence detection enhances user and operator awareness by providing repetitive real-time alerts only when meaningful or unexpected activity is identified. This allows for faster decision-making and targeted responses to genuine threats or anomalies, reducing the burden on users and monitoring teams and avoiding alert fatigue and loss of focus. Technology and AI stacks as provided by Ubiety Technologies along with their collaborative approach that includes the Wi-Fi sensing technology by Ivani, LLC is a perfect example of a platform that in addition to identifying human presence, can also identify through device detection if that human is authorized to be present on that premise. This allows monitoring personnel to filter the video alerts and alarms and only communicates when an anomaly is presented.

Reduced False Positives

One of the most persistent issues in remote video surveillance is the high volume of false positive alerts, often caused by motion from non-human sources or humans that are expected to be on premise. Presence detection significantly filters out these irrelevant triggers, ensuring that personnel are only notified when there is a verified presence, which can drastically lower operational costs and improve service levels. With fewer false alerts and more accurate detection, security teams and consumers can focus their attention where it matters most.

Integration With Automated Response Systems

Presence detection can serve as a trigger for automated security protocols, such as activating lights, locking doors, or issuing audio warnings. These rapid, automated deterrents not only prevent incidents before they escalate, but also enhance overall system responsiveness without requiring constant human oversight.

Data-Driven Insights for Continuous Improvement

Over time, presence detection systems can collect and analyze data to identify patterns, such as peak times of activity or high-risk zones. These insights support continuous improvement in security strategy, staffing schedules, and even facility design, leading to long-term operational gains.

As the landscape of remote monitoring evolves, presence detection is emerging not just as a complementary technology but as a foundational element in smart surveillance strategies. The convergence of AI, IoT, and sensor technology continues to make presence detection more accurate, affordable, and scalable.

Organizations and consumers that invest in presence-aware video monitoring systems are better equipped to protect assets, ensure safety, and streamline operations. In an era where proactive and intelligent security is paramount, presence detection offers a critical advantage for any organization relying on remote monitoring.
