Modern ‘Minutemen’

As a history buff, any time I can tie in a cool historical reference to a story, it makes me happy. In the case of this year’s SDM Systems Integrator of the Year, a history reference wasn’t optional, but required — so much so the company asked to have their picture taken in front of a Revolutionary War statue.
Minuteman Security & Life Safety was named with more than a nod to the famous “minutemen” of Massachusetts. “I was looking for a name that represented an organization that was formed to protect our country, communities, and our citizens,” says founder Joseph Lynch in the article. “The minuteman of the colony of Massachusetts ultimately became the nation’s first National Guard unit, and the 12 other colonies followed.”
The neat part of this analogy, though, is not just in the founding name, but in the subsequent mission the company has embarked on — in many ways echoing the country the original minutemen helped found.
Starting a few years ago, Minuteman (the company) began to expand regionally, first up to Maine, then to Florida. With a new private equity partner, Lynch and his team began an acquisition effort in 2023 to fill the gaps in the middle and now have a strong presence up and down the East Coast.
The neat part of this analogy, though, is not just in the founding name, but in the subsequent mission the company has embarked on — in many ways echoing the country the original minutemen helped found.
While making every effort to make sure the acquired companies were both culturally and technology-wise a good fit, it was still not easy incorporating multiple different regions and businesses into one cohesive entity.
Corporate President Ron Oetjen calls the resulting company “Minuteman Nation,” a phrase he initially coined for a motivational sales team speech, but soon found it struck a deeper chord throughout the company.
Oetjen then had to really define what the phrase meant, and again looked to that historical reference point: “Paul Revere made his midnight ride not far from our headquarters. Why was he riding to the minutemen? Because they were known to be ready at a moment’s notice to do whatever was necessary to defend the nation. To me, that is Minuteman today. We will get on a plane and go where we are needed. Minuteman is actually the right name for us: a group that is willing to do whatever is necessary for the team.”

Now Minuteman is now looking at Westward expansion, setting its sights on the Midwest and Texas, to start, with a goal to have a truly national and even international presence. As Oetjen puts it, the company has both “momentum and moxie,” and doesn’t have any intention of stopping any time soon.
But as our pick for the 2025 Systems Integrator of the Year, Minuteman Security & Life Safety is much more than a history lesson. The company has an interesting story to tell, good advice to impart for anyone going through an acquisition process on either side, and an approach to business and technology that is more than worth a read.
