Illuminating Dark Data: Using AI to Connect Objects, People, Behavior, and Time

March 26, 2026

Modern security teams have loads of data accessible at their fingertips. From Video Management Systems (VMS) capturing footage, to access control solutions that track identities, events, and credentials — today’s systems go way beyond manual logs. They can run reports, search for an object, or find “a person wearing a red shirt.” We’re all swimming in data. But can you quickly identify who, what, and when?

Despite an abundance of data, much of it remains “dark.” Disconnected and difficult to search across disparate systems. Video systems understand object movement and identification, but not the unique face characteristics of person to be able to rapidly broaden investigations. Access control systems that inherently detect identity do not have the capacity to track and interpret behavior. When an investigation takes place, they can fail due to the gap between systems. Manual video investigations are tedious, time-consuming, and may not unveil the right clip even after hours of searching. It becomes difficult for teams to manually correlate events and timelines.

This gap becomes especially visible when investigators face real-world questions that current tools struggle to answer. What if you need to find out who is associated with a particular object, regardless of what they’re wearing? You know what someone is wearing at a given point in time, but how does a security team quickly investigate that same individual across hours, days, and weeks when they might be wearing something else?

Enter, AI.

Illuminating Dark Security Data With AI

There are significant limitations in traditional search technology. Unique Facial metrics are unchanging, while clothing and accessories do. Traditional manual investigations require a restart each time a target’s appearance changes, slowing the process and increasing the likelihood of overlooking key footage.

Artificial Intelligence and facial recognition has the power to bridge this gap. With these tools, queries are no longer limited to a known object or fixed description – AI can search scores of footage based on the face of a target, rather than their attributes. Security teams are then served with all video clips where the target appears, regardless of their outfit or when they appeared in frame. The latest developments in agentic AI are even allowing teams to search using natural language find the evidence they need faster.

A Real-World Application: From Manual Investigation to AI-Driven Insight

Let’s examine how AI changes security investigations by reviewing a hypothetical scenario where a blue backpack is left behind in Secure Area A. Security teams need to know several pieces of information to find the answers, including:

  • Who left the backpack behind.
  • Were they authorized to be there or not?
  • Have they been in that area previously?
  • Have they been seen with anyone else repeatedly?
  • And most importantly, where are they now?

Traditional, manual searches can be fragmented and slow. Investigators will start by combing through surveillance footage for a blue backpack. Once found, they’ll manually review video clips until they’re able to identify the person who left it. If a match is found, they’ll have to switch between disparate systems to confirm identity and authorization.

To discover if the individual has been in the area (or anywhere else on site) before, multiple manual searches must be conducted across days or even weeks of video. If clothing changes or accessories throw off the search, it becomes even more fragmented and time-consuming.

The AI-driven approach transforms this workflow, returning results faster - with higher accuracy and less effort. AI-powered facial recognition seamlessly connects objects, faces, and behavior over time—across a single system. Security personnel can ask an AI agent: “Who left a blue backpack in secure area A, and have they been there before? Are they part of our employee database? Are they included on any of our watchlists?”

In seconds, the system identifies the individual, verifies authorization, and traces their presence at the prior location and their current one.

AI Alert Agents that do the Heavy Lifting

How could your team use an AI Agent that monitors for elements of data without needing eyes on cameras 24/7? AI alert agents can be used to help keep staff safer, reduce non-compliance issues or fines, and reduce liability overall. For example:

  1. Notify me when employees are not wearing PPE
  2. Notify me if Jim Smith enters the facility with a stranger
  3. Notify me of who was carrying a box during non-working hours
  4. Notify me if anyone unknown is walking with a child under the age of 12

The result is a fundamental shift in how security teams operate. It’s a force multiplier that facilitates faster, simpler investigations for security teams. Data that was once obscured and dark becomes a beacon and a resource that brings immediate, actionable intelligence that teams can use for response and decision making.

With AI, teams gain faster investigations, rapid and accurate results, and actionable intelligence instead of disconnected data. Having AI as part of your solution is not just another tool, it acts like a member of the team.
