First Annual Gala Honors SDM 100 Dealers

July 1, 2006
SDM's editor, Laura Stepanek, and publisher, Mark McCourt, took part in the dancing at the first annual SDM 100 gala in Savannah, Ga.

The publisher and editor of SDM Magazine hosted the first annual SDM 100 gala in Savannah, Ga., on May 20 at the Hyatt Regency Ballroom, overlooking the Savannah River. This enchanted evening was conceived to honor security firms that are among the largest in the nation, as ranked on the 2006 SDM 100 report.

The SDM 100 is SDM Magazine’s exclusive report of the largest firms in the business of selling, installing, servicing and monitoring electronic security systems. This year marked the 16th annual SDM 100 report, which measures consumer dollars captured by providers such as ADT Security, Brink’s Home Security, Protection One, HSM Electronic Protection Services, and many smaller entrepreneurs and family-owned businesses.

The SDM 100 companies garnered $6.68 billion in annual revenue – representing 25 percent market share of the entire security-installing industry. This represents tremendous buying power to the manufacturers and service providers that serve the security industry.

Dick Sampson, American Alarm & Communications Inc., and Stephen Doyle, executive vice president of the Central Station Alarm Association, enjoy the lovely overlook of the Savannah River at the first annual SDM 100 gala.

The gala was SDM’s landmark event to honor the top executives from those firms. It was held in conjunction with the Central Station Alarm Association’s 2006 Electronic Security Forum & Exposition – an educational forum open to the entire security industry.

The Central Station Alarm Association, in support of the SDM 100 gala, was represented by (seated, left to right) Mr. & Mrs. Stephen Doyle; Mr. & Mrs. John Murphy; (standing, left to right) Mr. & Mrs. Bud Wulforst; Mr. & Mrs. Lou Fiore; and Mr. & Mrs. Peter Lowitt.

Guests at the SDM 100 gala were invited to begin the evening with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres while they greeted and met representatives from SDM’s sponsor companies – Honeywell Security, ADI, and Micro Key Software – as well as other vendors and their colleagues at other SDM 100 firms.

SDM’s editor, Laura Stepanek, welcomed all of the guests and then recognized the SDM 100 companies in attendance. Each received a plaque featuring the SDM 100 cover, engraved with their company name and rank on the SDM 100.

During the cocktail hour, First Dance Productions Atlanta provided gala attendees with a mini-dancing lesson, where dancers learned the steps to a foxtrot and a swing. While dinner was served, the performers entertained with professional appearances by four couples who danced a dramatic Argentine tango, the Rumba, a Spanish-style Paso Doble, the foxtrot, a romantic Bolero, a classic traditional waltz, a smooth and funky West Coast swing, a Salsa dance, and a Latin Merengue.

Chatting at the SDM 100 gala are Melissa Pitfield, DMP (Digital Monitoring Products) and Bob Bonifas, Alarm Detection Systems Inc.

The evening ended with an open dance floor, and guests were invited to partake in a dessert and cognac bar. It was a remarkable evening in that SDM’s team had the opportunity to honor the SDM 100 and demonstrate its respect for their successful leadership in the security industry.
