What do the digital dialer, passive infrared detector, first microprocessor-based control, and chip camera all have in common? These technologies each in their time changed the security industry. And each were winners of product achievement awards in the Security Industry Association’s (SIA) New Product Showcase (NPS).

SIA’s New Product Showcase is an internationally recognized promotion and awards program, held each year at ISC West. The program is designed and refined by the NPS committee that I have chaired for more than 20 years. It is produced by SIA in collaboration with Reed Expo/ISC management and made possible by the supplier entrants whose products are judged by some of the most prestigious and knowledgeable product buyers, reviewers and installers in the industry.

Judges are volunteers and represent a cross-section of industry buyers and influencers. They include central station alarm companies, systems integrators, consultants/specifiers, distributors, and high-profile end users.

For attendees at ISC West, the New Product Showcase provides a valuable resource. While it may seem that three days is sufficient to fully explore the ISC West show floor, as the show has grown in size so has the challenge of finding and distinguishing what is new from everything else. Walking a show floor is difficult, and the one product that may just change your business or solve a customer problem is one that you may overlook. Referencing and using NPS as a guide allows ISC West show attendees to instantly find what’s new among products, services and technologies.

“There are so many manufacturers, and so many new products, it becomes difficult for a buyer to keep up with technology and know what is real and what is worth looking at,” says Shelly Binder, vice president of Tech Systems Inc., a systems integrator, and a veteran NPS judge. “NPS is a way for a buyer to see new products and new trends without having to sort through mountains of brochures, e-mails, spec sheets and vendor presentations.”

Another advantage for buyers is that NPS sometimes highlights products that might otherwise be overlooked. You expect to find some of the best products offered by the well-known and respected suppliers at the show. But some of the hidden treasures and future industry-transforming products may just as frequently be found at the smaller booths, too. Indeed, many of the past NPS winners have come from these smaller vendors on the trade show floor.

Technology Foundations

NPS is often a reflection of where the industry is moving, what is shaping it and current customer demands. Reflecting on past NPS entries and winners reveals the certainty that the only thing that has remained constant about security technology is change and innovation.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, products submitted to what was once the College of New Products (the predecessor to NPS) were most often developed for the burglar alarm market. This included alarm control panels, magnetic contacts, more compact speakers (for replacing bells), and wireless devices.

These products created the foundation for the security market, but not until the introduction of the digital dialer did the market thrive. The digital dialer connected to a customer’s existing telephone line and made emergency event communication affordable for the masses — not just for the elite or very wealthy.

The 1980s was a great decade for the security industry, during which time products improved, prices decreased, and more devices were introduced through NPS. Electronic access control systems began to grow and mature. The industry began to see the first passive infrared sensors. These PIRs provided more reliable and affordable space protection, but still were expensive and far from trouble-free. It was not until dual-technology detection devices that these become real solutions, again enabling the market to expand.

The next major technology shift in the 1980s was heralded by microprocessor-based products, as well as what could then be called the beginnings of “convergence” (or “integration,” because it was more hardware- than software-centric). Intrusion alarm and access control systems were vying to become the head end for a unified system that blended security, fire, access control and intrusion detection.

The 1990s typified an explosion in video products. We saw the phenomenal growth in DVRs, as well as many of the specialty cameras we use regularly today. There was nothing like it before, yet it was just the beginning of innovation and options in the video market.

With the first decade of the 21st Century more than halfway elapsed, what will we say about the current trends? Several forces have changed the market and driven technology advances. The two most significant were the tragic events of September 11 and the growth of the Internet. Add these to the continued sophistication of buyers, their importance within their organizations, global expansion, and the drive for conversion — and you have the makings for the next technology wave.

What’s Now & what’s Next?

Software platforms, video analytics, smart sensors, biometric devices, smart cards, a new communicator? Which will change the industry enduringly? In some cases it may be too soon to say, but through NPS in the past several years, some definite trends have emerged.

“Though we see new products each year that seem to run the gamut in terms of new technologies, there does seem to be a particular focus most years,” Binder says. “A few years ago it was intelligent video; then it was improvements and enhancements in the digital camera product line. Now the emphasis is on IP products and true, integrated, networked systems. Because these areas are relatively new in the industry, and because there is still so much improvement to be recognized, I expect the focus to remain in these areas for the next few years.”

Joseph Verber, manager of loss prevention for Yum Foods, another NPS veteran judge, remarks, “Security technology is changing rapidly. Simplicity and integration will be the key. Manufacturers and integrators will position their business to accommodate end-user needs with cost effective life-safety and security products.”

In the past two years, he adds, digital video has really come to the forefront as a big new technology for end users. “DVRs today are compact, fast and solve a multitude of problems,” he says. “They are capable of integrating with entire security networks and offer the ability to manage remotely. Organizations enhance security, provide safer workplaces, and reduce cost, adding value to the bottom line.”

And indeed, NPS supports that thinking. In 2006 there were just shy of 100 products entered in the NPS program. Of the 18 awards presented, 11 were for video-related products. An interesting comparison is with the 2000 NPS, when there was a greater emphasis on access control products.

Only time will tell what security products will be featured in the New Product Showcase by decade’s end. Personally, I think we will continue to see advances in video (especially network/IP devices), access control products that address the use of smart cards and the Internet, plus innovative products that will help better enable convergence of IT and physical security products and markets.

With the shift to digital, a continued focus on convergence, and the entry of network devices into the security market, our industry has seen a large and rapid increase in the number of new products and technologies.

This year SIA NPS developed new submission and award categories, including commercial audio; IP devices, products and software; urban security; and video analytics. Will one of this year’s submissions change your business, change the industry, or just make your job a little easier?

When you visit this year’s ISC West show (March 28-30, 2007 at the Sands Expo & Convention Center in Las Vegas;www.iscwest.com), be sure to pick up the NPS directory, or visit us online atsiaonline.org. Results of this year’s awards will be announced at 3:00 p.m. on March 28.

Sidebar: Why Should You Participate as an NPS Judge?

If you have been in the industry for even five years you have experienced the market’s growth and the challenge of finding the right products. That is why NPS has become even more invaluable — so much so that some of the industry’s most respected end-user organizations, consultants, installation companies, distributors and technology writers participate in NPS as a judge. They volunteer and often offer to continue as a judge, year after year.

“There are several reasons I participate as a New Product Showcase judge,” says Dini Jones, president of Security Products Company, a wholesale distributor. “It truly is a great way to get an overview of what’s really ‘new’ in the industry, regardless of how the product comes to market. For me, personally, NPS is a wonderful networking opportunity and a great way to listen to the viewpoints and opinions of some truly exceptional industry participants. It’s an opportunity to look at a product from several different views. Each judge brings their own experience and expertise to the table and we all share knowledge.”

Being an NPS judge allows Shelly Binder, vice president of Tech Systems Inc., a systems integrator, to “see the trends in technology firsthand. Not only do I see new products from the existing vendors, but I also see offerings from new manufacturers that I might not otherwise be aware of.”

If you are interested and qualified in becoming a NPS judge please contact Leigh A. McGuire atlmcguire@siaonline.org.
