Honeywell Security’s new iGSM radio.

Honeywell Security Has ‘Tomorrow’s’ Communication Products Ready Today

Less than a year from now, the Federal Communication Commission’s AMPS Sunset Clause deadline officially arrives, along with serious implications for security alarm transmission technology. Without the analog networks, today’s approximately one million fixed devices that use AMPS could hit a giant alarm transmission roadblock.

One popular AMPS alternative, however, is Global System for Mobile (GSM) communication, which is one of the world’s most popular mobile phone standards. According to the GSM Association, more than two billion people globally used GSM phones as of 2006. Transmitting signals through GSM gives security alarms high priority on the cellular network, making it more reliable. Because it’s a wireless technology, the GSM alarm radio also can be a viable backup solution for homes that use traditional phone lines. It’s also an ideal solution for homes without landlines, or households that use Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) for their communications.

Some alarm radio manufacturers, such as Honeywell, have introduced GSM radios that offer a second and even third communication path. Honeywell’s GSM radios, for instance, also use Short Message Service (SMS), as well as the Internet as communication paths for added reliability.

Finally, GSM is gaining steam in popularity for its convenience. Its wide bandwidth enables users to control their security systems and receive information through any text-messaging device such as a cell phone or PDA. The technology also offers Web-based remote system control, can notify customers of system events, and features video notification for systems with network cameras.
