Inteconnex Installs 1.5K Wireless Locks at University of Nebraska

When a university in Lincoln, Neb., needed updated technology to prepare for a potential move to mobile credentials, Inteconnex stepped in to install nearly 1,500 wireless locks on ACRE AccessIT software in just over a months’ time.
The project covered approximately 584,000 sq ft. for student housing at the University of Nebraska. The 5,000-lock installation was broken into three phases across three years. Phase I consisted of installing and commissioning a mix of 1,457 mortise and cylindrical locks in three housing buildings on campus. Phase II kicked off in May 2025 and consists of a mix of 1,904 mortise and cylindrical wireless locks deployed over four housing buildings on campus. Three buildings are located on campus for Phase I of the project: University Suites, Eastside Suites, and Knoll Residential Center.
Inteconnex, founded by Marc Meyer in 2001 and acquired by the Kingsmark Security Group in August of 2024, is committed to high-quality products, top-notch service, and 24/7 support. “With our core values of family, safety, service, and respect, and the talent and commitment of our team, our company has earned the ongoing trust of our valued customers and grown to be a leading security integrator in the Midwest,” said Matthew Hoeke, vice president and general manager, Inteconnex. “We work relentlessly to understand our customers’ situations, existing infrastructures, and goals so that we can provide the best long-term solutions tailored to each business and organization.”
Thus, the Interconnex team worked closely with the university to understand and respond to the tight timeframe of the project. “All the locks needed to be installed within a six-week window, a very short timeline,” Hoeke said. “Inteconnex leveraged the installation team from ASSA ABLOY to deploy the IN120 Wi-Fi locks within the installation window. Even when summer camp participants occupied rooms, the installation period had minimal disruption to the summer campus student life.”
This was a new system for the university, though the campus has held security-related contracts with Inteconnex for over 15 years. “We have also built upon our relationship with this end user over the years and have become a trusted resource for them,” Hoeke said. “Based on our initial conversations, we could deliver during that period due to the ease of installation of the IN120 Wi-Fi locks.”
Leveraging the ASSA ABLOY IN120 solution was the most cutting-edge aspect of this project, Hoeke said. The university set a long-term goal of migrating to a single mobile credential for all students and staff on campus, and the IN120 solution helped set this goal in motion.
Once the system is installed during each phase of the project, the university will manage everything internally. “This aligns with their broader goal of implementing a seamless system to manage openings internally and to easily grant or revoke user credentials, set schedules, etc.,” Hoeke said. “We met their need to deliver a secure and user-friendly solution for their teams to manage in-house.”
The Phase I project also brought the challenge of installing a new access control software and system tailored to the university’s housing operations; it had to be a user-friendly interface for the university team to manage seamlessly. This Phase I deployment was successful because the Inteconnex, ACRE, and ASSA ABLOY teams worked collaboratively with the university to deliver this enhanced security to campus housing. This deployment also sets the stage for Phases 2 and 3 of the full project to provide more campus security for the students and ease of management for the university staff.
“We were proud to be part of this project,” Hoeke said. “The sheer size of it was exciting, and we successfully executed it within the short deployment time to meet the university’s needs. With only three lock issues out of more than 1,400 lock sets, it is a huge accomplishment. Our teams were able to troubleshoot the problems that arose to complete the deployment.”
