A Chicago Police Department (CPD) spokesperson said the department would soon announce a pilot program in which it will join forces with video doorbell maker Ring, potentially giving police access to thousands of residential cameras in Chicago, according to an article published by the Chicago Sun Times on September 18.

Vivint Smart Home Inc., a smart home technology company attempting to redefine the home experience through intelligently designed cloud-enabled solutions ranked No. 2 on the SDM 100, and Mosaic Acquisition Corp., a publicly traded special purpose acquisition company, have entered into a definitive agreement to merge Vivint with a subsidiary of Mosaic.

Support.com Inc., a provider of technical support solutions for businesses and consumers, and InstallerNet, a provider of professional installation service solutions for the connected home and automobile, announced the launch of a new end-to-end program designed to help companies deliver a better customer experience by getting the most out of their IoT devices both in the home and on the road.

Call it analytics, big data, business intelligence, machine learning, AI, or something else — these terms are not interchangeable, but in today’s security landscape they are often used to mean approximately the same thing: the idea that you can take traditional security technology (video, access control, intrusion, etc.) and expand its use to benefit the business side of whatever customer you are applying it to.

On Friday, August 16, American Defense Systems (Dallas, Texas) acquired Direct Protect Security and Surveillance out of Costa Mesa, Calif. Direct Protect has provided smart home solutions to residents and businesses in over 13 states for close to 10 years.  

The Z-Wave Alliance, a global membership organization dedicated to advancing the Z-Wave wireless smart home protocol, announced the addition of home security provider Ring as a principal member. 

IKEA Home smart was initiated as a project in 2012 with the ambition to enrich life at home by incorporating digital elements and technologies into products and solutions. Several launches within the smart home has followed since then and now IKEA has taken the strategic decision to invest even more in the home smart area by establishing IKEA Home smart as its own business unit within IKEA of Sweden.
