It’s becoming increasingly commonplace for third-party central stations to offer video monitoring services — sometimes known as managed video services — such as remote video guard tours, video verification of alarm signals and video escort services. But often these services represent a relatively small percentage of the third-party central station’s total revenues.

"Cloud computing” is a catch-all term that refers to many different technologies and business models. But they are not all created equally. Some are turnkey; others roll-your-own. Some are secure; others easily exploited. Some are publicly accessible, others highly restricted. For cloud-based physical security applications, all of these characteristics are important to consider.

ADT Security Services and Brivo Systems announced the implementation of a web-based access control solution for five federal facilities managed by the General Services Administration in Detroit and the Chicago area. The Brivo ACS OnSite Aparato solution helps fulfill Homeland Security/Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12), intended to enhance security and reduce identity fraud at all federal facilities by establishing common identification standards for employees and contractors.

There are fewer than 3,000 dealer-owned central stations in the industry, but there are tens of thousands of security dealers operating without a central station who offer monitoring through the use of third-party central stations. 

Napco Security’s iSee Video has added a Complete Wireless Outdoor Camera Kit to its line of Wi-Fi cameras. iSee Video Wi-Fi cameras make installations a cinch in as little as 10 min., the company said. 

Advances in surveillance video equipment and widespread availability of broadband connectivity such as DSL and cable modems have made possible a range of video monitoring options.
